You can see that the model with the density of matter ΩM = 0.3 and the energy density describes best the measurements; in units of that critical density at which compensation for the expansion of the universe at infinity would occur. For this density, which is derived from the distances to the supernovae, it can again be concluded that all the directly observed matter in the galaxies, the intracluster medium and all the other astronomical objects is not sufficient to determine the mean density of matter in the universe. Dark matter is again needed to reach this density. To what extent the correspondence principle - every better model must reproduce the correct statements of a less far-reaching model - plays a role here with regard to dark matter is certainly an exciting, almost philosophical question. Another puzzle is the accelerated expansion of the universe derived from supernova observations. The model into which the observed supernovae fit best is an accelerated expanding universe. What exactly is the “engine” of this expansion remains a mystery. And as with the dark matter phenomenon, the term dark energy seems to describe this snapshot of scientific knowledge well. We know what properties these dark components possess, but we do not know their physical causation.
